Landing a job is easier with experience and expertise. We help our kids explore various career options and develop marketable skills. Teens can learn the basics of janitorial services, landscaping, the culinary arts, computer programming and carpentry at Elk Hill. Moreover, if their interests lie outside of these professions, we connect them to resources and mentors in the nearby community. Either way, our kids begin to envision a future where hard work pays off and success is in reach.
Nate came to Elk Hill with his clothes in a garbage bag and a chip on his shoulder. According to his grandmother, Elk Hill was his last hope. She predicted that otherwise, the 15-year-old would end up in juvenile detention within the month. She said the odds were about the same that he would end up dead. Two years later, Nate stands shoulder-to-shoulder with 19 other young men and women at the Elk Hill graduation ceremony. He looks proud as he accepts his high school diploma and serious about accepting responsibility for his future.
Scholarships go to young men and women for a variety of reasons. Some do not qualify for state funding. Others come to us prior to receiving approval for placement or who run out of state funding before they are ready to return to their communities. Either way, Elk Hill donors ensure that these kids get the support they need from Elk Hill.
Elk Hill’s old motto, “Hanging tough with tough kids” rings true for our summer camp. Kids who would otherwise not make it in a traditional summer camp can attend our camp. With a ration of 9 campers to 1 counselor, Elk Hill provides the needed support for at-risk kids. Our Day Treatment therapists provide additional staffing so we can serve children struggling with emotional and behavioral issues. Elk Hill is a safe place for these children, providing them with academic instruction, therapy and a whole-lot-of fun.
If you can’t read, you can’t succeed; in school, in work and in life. When teens come to us reading below grade level, as many of them do, our reading specialist, Mrs. Ghee, moves to the rescue. Away from the ridicule of fellow classmate, she gives our students individualized attention and increases their reading level by an average of one and a half grades each year. As their reading improves, their academic achievements grow and a pathway to future success becomes clearer. Mrs. Ghee brings our Literacy for Life program to 24 summer campers who need our help with reading.
Help give children and families courage…to change, to heal, to grow, to learn…
